If we had planned a little better, doing an overnight would have allowed us more time in a few towns and less time just sitting on the boat. We started at Rüdesheim and made our way to St. Goar, which took approximately two hours. The boat served drinks on the top deck—coffee, hot chocolate, water, soda, wine and beer—so for the morning ride it was lovely to sit outside and enjoy the scenery. The ride home was longer because we were going upstream so it took three hours. The adults shared a bottle of local German wine and it made the trip a little more authentic. We brought our own food on board; however, there was a full-service restaurant downstairs on our boat.
More on the Rhine River in Germany
The lower-priced offshoot of Australian-owned all-inclusive line Scenic has contemporary ships that tend to attract a slightly younger crowd -- with good reason. With its fairy-tale castles and picture-perfect scenery, the Rhine is arguably Europe's most romantic river. You can harness that dreamy atmosphere on Uniworld's one-of-a-kind boutique vessels, like the River Queen. Viking regularly travels up and down the Rhine with its line of over 40, nearly identical sister ships. AmaWaterway’s “Captivating Rhine” itinerary runs from Amsterdam to Basel, while its “Enchanting Rhine” cruise runs in the opposite direction.
Tauck: Rhine Enchantment, Amsterdam to Milan
A few independent Rhine boat cruise operators cooperate under the Weisse Flotte Rhein banner. These companies cruise on all parts of the Rhine but departures and cruises are most frequent in the vicinity of the Rhine where these independent boat cruise lines are based. Many cruise lines offer discount combination tickets for cruises and sightseeing sites. Depending on the season, KD has scheduled cruises on the Rhine, Mosel, and Main rivers and panorama cruises in Düsseldorf, Cologne, Cochem, and Frankfurt. During the high season, KD has at least two boats doing the daily cruise route from Rüdesheim and Bingen to Koblenz (and return) with further boats cruising between Mainz and Boppard.
These sailings are accompanied by a professional wine host who leads onboard tastings and discussions and accompanies trips to local wineries and vineyards. For starters, all of the major river cruise lines sail the Rhine, from Viking to Uniworld and AmaWaterways. That puts the best Rhine River cruise within reach for any type of traveler. However, the differences between each can make or break your Rhine River cruise experience.
There are plenty of places in each port to soak up the festive European atmosphere, while making time to pick up a Christmas-themed trinket or two in either Amsterdam or Cologne, Germany. It’s a romantic route marked by the region’s legendary castles and half-timbered houses, hillside vineyards, and fairy-tale Black Forest landscapes—along with a pass through the dramatic Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Köln-Düsseldorfer (KD) and the Weisse Flotte Rhein are the best-known day-trip riverboat cruise lines on the Rhine River in Germany and are good choices for short to all-day excursion cruises. Popular day-trip cruises are to tour the Loreley Valley between Rüdesheim, St Goar, and Koblenz or panorama sightseeing cruises in larger cities such as Cologne, Düsseldorf, Cochem (Mosel), and Frankfurt (Main).
All of AmaWaterways' European ships are members of the Chaine des Rotisseurs, a prestigious international gastronomic society. The line's intimate Chef's Table restaurant -- where all guests get to dine free once during their cruise -- also ups the gourmet credentials. Emerald Cruises is a great option for cruisers in their earlier adult decades.
KD Tours operates the majority of the daily cruises going up and down the river. If the Frankfurt area is where you’re day-tripping from, my suggestion is start in Rüdesheim or Mainz. Rüdesheim is a little further down the river (the river flows north) and most of the good sights to see start there.
Your KD RhinePass is the perfect opportunity to explore the UNESCO-protected Middle Rhine valley known for its beautiful castles, amazing vineyards, fabled Loreley Rock and much more. We’ve done luxury cruises previously, but this time it’s a two-hour morning trip on a KD Rhine River Cruise starting at Oberwesel and sailing upstream to Boppard. Cruises between Linz and Koblenz are rare and usually only for repositioning boats after Rhine in Flames fireworks shows.

Day-trip cruises on the Rhine River are very popular in Germany with departures available from many cities and even small towns on the Rhine. Reservations are often not possible for regular day cruises but it is worth planning a bit in advance to take advantage of savings deals to get the best value (and finest views) from a cruise. Most cruise lines now also accept online ticket purchases but several still prefer to sell tickets directly at the quay or on board cruise boats. Avalon Waterways was one of the first lines to recognize that not all river cruise passengers want to do the same thing.
Not all are necessarily open to the public and some only open during certain times, but that’s a lot of potential castles to explore. Uniworld’s “Tulip and Windmills” cruise begins on the Rhine, but then veers to the west toward Belgium. Guests will also get to visit small, charming Dutch towns, such as Enkhuizen, Hoorn, and Veere, and take in the dazzling skyline of Rotterdam. European river cruises are especially popular around the holiday season when Christmas markets are in business. The beautiful riverside towns, castles and vineyards that are so reminiscent of this part of the Rhine river soon come into view and no matter how many times we see these views, they are just as enjoyable as ever. And of course, the key attraction along this section is the legendary Lorelei Rock!
